volunteered for the American force which was deployed in Palestine. Richard had always wanted to see the world, and as a Christian, he now had the opportunity to visit the Holy Land and the Holy Places. Richard arrived as part of the American Defense Force which landed immediately upon the occupation of the State of Israel and its official re-designation as the State of Palestine. In an aggressive international campaign, the United States forced the Arab countries to evacuate the territory of the former State of Israel, with the agreement that the Palestinian State would annex the territory of the State of Israel, "provided that civil rights and democracy in it would be preserved." The Arabs' prerequisite condition was that the American auxiliary forces not include Jews or former Israelis, to which the United States President agreed. The deployment force was positioned in the Dan Region, and the Kriyot area north of Haifa, where there were heavy pockets of Israeli settlement. The rest of the territories of the country were deserted and slowly began to be settled by the families of Palestinian cronies. The resettlement process began to be a hot topic on the Palestinian street, and Marwan Barghouti declared that popular committees would be established in order to examine and re-populate the refugees in the Land of Israel. The State of Palestine objected to the deployment of the American force in Jerusalem for political and religious reasons. Moreover, it was important to the top Palestinian echelons to establish solid facts, de facto, in Jerusalem and to eliminate the Jewish settlement there as much as possible. For this reason, and also since most of the civilian population in Jerusalem had been decimated, only islands of Israeli residents were left in Jerusalem, mostly in the Orthodox neighborhoods. There the Americans did not enter. The few non-Orthodox Israeli Jerusalemites who survived had left the city for Tel-Aviv and its environs. Now, a year and a half after the end of the war, all was peaceful and sad. Empty streets, with depression and desperation wafting from each corner. Palestinian police and military forces were seen everywhere in the country, while the soldiers of the rest of the Arab countries returned to their countries, leaving behind only military advisors, and the Palestinians to rule the remaining refugees of the Israeli civil population. Richard had already managed to fall in love with the Israeli warmth and openness; however, he sensed that the Israeli nation had suffered a terrible trauma, which would not be soon forgotten. He felt it in his conversations with people on the street. It was hard for him to feel that much sadness among the people. The light went out and Richard raised his eyes towards the small illuminated stage. A petite redheaded singer appeared on the stage, and he immediately recognized her. He remembered how her blazing eyes bore into him on that terrible day when he stood as a buffer between the thousands of frightened Israeli citizens and their freedom. He felt the piercing of his heart and was pleased that God had answered his prayers and helped him find her again. There was something winning about her singing and her foreign accent that touched his heart. Nili sang poignant American songs of break-ups and unrequited love. Richard knew and loved most of the songs. Her petite figure also pleased him, her small yet prominent breasts moving beneath her blouse. Now, he had time to gaze upon her face and body and wondered what she felt when she sang, and how a former Israeli, now a Palestinian citizen, felt. Accompanied by a piano in the background, she stood and sang, almost motionless, exposed to the audience, practically naked. Richard suddenly felt an urge to come close to her, when he felt her loneliness and sorrow. In his mind's eye he saw himself making love to her, bringing her to ecstasy. He smiled, shaking himself loose from his erotic dream, and signaled the waiter to bring him another glass of beer. There was no doubt that he liked her. Coming from a religious Christian background, he felt that the second meeting with her was no coincidence. The circumstances of their first meeting were so miserable, Richard thought, that surely he would not see her again, and if he did, she would almost certainly ignore him, at best. He could not forget the image of her penetrating gaze boring into his eyes in their first encounter on the Tel-Aviv beach on that bitter day. However, now, when he found her by chance in this pub in south Tel-Aviv, near the beach, he felt as though his meeting with her was arranged by a higher power. That's all folks |
